THE HAGUE (AP) - A right-wing Dutch lawmaker wants women jailed for wearing the head-to-toe Islamic robe known as a burqa, calling it a ''symbol of oppression.''
Geert Wilders, whose Freedom Party has nine lawmakers in the 150-seat lower house of Dutch parliament, filed a proposed law change Thursday that would make wearing a burqa in public a crime punishable by up to 12 days jail.
''The burqa and niqab are a symbol of oppression of women,'' Wilders told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. He said burqas and the niqab - a full-faced veil with only a slit for the eyes - hindered integration of Muslim women into Dutch society and also were a security risk. (yep - burqas make great disguises for those manly jihadists fleeing the law)
''If you want to wear a burqa, you should do it somewhere other than the Netherlands,'' Wilders added.
A prominent spokesman for the Dutch Islamic community, Ayhan Tonca, called Wilders' proposal ''totally out of proportion'' and accused Wilders of seeking to broaden a rift between Muslims and the rest of Dutch society.
Last November, the Dutch government said it was drawing up legislation to ban burqas, but that administration was defeated in elections the same month and the new centrist coalition of Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende has no plans to implement a burqa ban, meaning Wilders' proposal has little chance of becoming law.
However, because Wilders has submitted the proposal, it will have to be debated in Parliament and could help solidify his support among right-wing voters. He said he expected that to happen by the end of the year.
Only a handful of women wear the burqa in the Netherlands, but the debate over whether to outlaw it underscores a drift away from traditional Dutch tolerance and unease with the growing influence of Islam in the country. (the "growing influence" is worldwide & is called Global Caliphate)
About 6 percent of the Dutch population of 16 million is Muslim and Wilders accuses many Muslims of failing to integrate.
He said that a burqa ban would help women who wear the robe to find work and make Dutch friends. ''Nobody is going to employ somebody wearing a burqa,'' he added. (of course in the UK these burqa babes SUE to continue to wear their bee keepers outfits)
Wilders is well-known for his anti-Islam outbursts and is constantly under protection from Dutch security.
During last year's election campaign, he warned that the Netherlands was threatened by a ''tsunami'' of radical Islam and said Muslims should tear up half of the Quran if they wish to belong to Dutch society. (GREAT IDEA!!!!!!!! as the two cannot coexist)
Security and intelligence services have warned Wilders that his comments risk fanning anti-Dutch sentiment in Islamic countries, but he refuses to rein in his rhetoric.
''This is not a law for Saudi Arabia, this is a law for the Netherlands,'' he said. ''I couldn't care less what people in the Middle East think about it.'' ( HALLELUIAH!!!!!!!)
Muslim spokesman Tonca accused Wilders of attacking his faith. ''He is just involved in anti-Islamic politics,'' he said.
''This is totally out of proportion,'' Tonca added. ''He is taking on a problem that is not a problem, There are only a few people in the Netherlands who wear the burqa.'' (Just wait a year or two - the Netherlands will be swarming with women in burqas - just like Londonistan)

Wilder's certainly doesn't mince his word, in fact I think he would mince a few more thing if he got the chance. He has burnt his boats and it is a terrible thing to think that this fine man who lives just a few miles to the north of where I live will not be able to show his face in public because of all the death threats. Not to be able to walk freely in you own country is an reflection of the dimitute we are living under. He has had more than 600 death threats and he has to have an armed guard when he goes for a piss in the Dutch Houses of parliament. The next election should be very interesting there are about 9 political parties in parliament and it is impossible to get a majority for one party. All Governments are coalitions. The present coalition is between the Conservative party the Labour party and a small Calvinistic religious party. If he gets more than the 9 seats he has got now it will be very funny to see if the Dutch will even be able to form a Government at the next election. It took nearly 3 months to form this one. If he gets between 20 and 30 seats, and he has a good chance. He will be one of the largest parties in parliament. None will work with him or have him in a coalitions because more and more of the parties are dependent on the muslim vote and they wont want to alienate them. Under those conditions you will need somewhere in the region of 5 to 6 parties to form a coalition government, which will be so unstable it wont last very long.

Yorkshireminer, thanks for that overview, I am always very interested in developments in Holland and Scandinavia as I suspect the kickback against Islam will start there first, given that with a smaller population, any demographic changes are more noticable and felt more keenly.
Is the figure of 6 percent Muslims in Holland (overall) correct? I'm sure this is dwarfed by the numbers in Amsterdam , Rotterdam etc.

Just a small point, well a big point really, the Nignog level is approaching 50% in the four largest cities in the Netherlands. In Amsterdam more non Dutch than Dutch are now born and Rotterdam will soon follow. Antwerp is up there with them, the Flemish Nationalist party reached the apogee of there followers in the last election. They gained about 33% of the votes but in the next election if they get the same % of the white vote the percentage will go down because of white flight and muslim immigration. I would like to remind you that Antwerp and Rotterdam are Europe's biggest ports especially Rotterdam and the connection via the Rhine to Germany and central Europe. Rotterdam is not only Nederland biggest port but Germany's and Switzerland's as well, with the new 3,000 ton barge canal from the Rhine to the Danube in Bavaria it is being used more and more by Hungary Austria and Czechoslovakia. Just a small thought to go to bed on where do you think the fighting will be if Europe disintegrates into Civil war. I will give you two guess one begins with a R and the other with an A

Unbelievable as it may seem, the Dutch 'Minister voor Wonen, Wijken en Integratie' (Residence, Neighbourhoods and Integration (I'm not making this up)), Ella Vogelaar, today has declared in an interview that The Netherlands will be Islamic at some point in the future. She feels that The Netherlands should adapt to Islam, and subsidise Islamic institutions. What will emerge, according to her, is a "Christian-Jewish-Islamic culture". As if Christianity and Judaism aren't 100% opposite to Islam's teachings. The stupidity of the statement is mind boggling.

An al-Qaeda fanatic jailed for inciting murder online was caught making a website urging terror attacks - from his cell in Britain’s most secure prison.

Steven Sackur is a typical ignorant BBC journalist. His idea of Europe, just as all of BBC, is summed up by "tolerance of and for all". Thats it. Such views extended ad infinitum, leads to totalitarianism. In the prsent case, Islamic totalitarianism, which is worse then the Nazi and Communist types combined. The reason for this is that Islamic totalitarianism is a religion, while the other two are atleast subject to some reason ie part of the Western mode of thought. And because of this, both failed. The same is just not true for Islamic totalitarianism. In addition, Islamic totalitarianism demands adherence, on pain of death, to practices that make the other two totalitarianisms look quite liberal by comparison.

He gave Wilders a really hard time - or he tried to - and he was personally involved in it. It wasn't just a professional hard interview.

The Dutch invented the policy of multi-culturalism. They wanted to encourage immigration to fill a gap in the labour force and it was mainly Turkish Muslims who came. They expected them to return in time. But there was a problem: what about their children how could they be expected to go home if they had a Dutch education? So parallel education and spiritual support structures were established to provide cultural grounding for the kids when they returned to their native lands. However the immigrant communities stayed and multi-culturalism ensured that they failed to integrate. Now that there is tension between the Muslim world and the West Muslim women are using traditional dress, which they had previously abandoned, as a badge of belonging. The Dutch government needs to be more sensitive in their response or the tensions will escalate.
